COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

FESTIVAL OF THRIFT CIC

Company Number: 09561053 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 March 2026

Company activities and impact

2025/26 marked the third and final year of our three-year contract with Stockton Borough Council to deliver our annual Festival of Thrift in Billingham. We welcomed 30,000 visitors to Billingham over two days on 20th and 21st September 2025. The Festival achieved regional and national media coverage and a wealth of positive feedback from attenders: It's a delight to attend - run by lovely people, full of spirit and energy and enthusiasm. So important in bringing people together in these challenging times. Thank you for all you do! hugely appreciated by all. Our shop front base in Stockton town centre, Institute of Thrifty Ideas, developed during the year as a hub for creative learning and sustainability education, delivering workshops and networking sessions, including Sew Like a Pro and a monthly Climate Cafe. In addition, we built a new partnership with Cultivate Tees Valley and their community garden group meeting at the Hope Centre in Roseworth, Stockton, to develop and deliver a community food project with local residents, focusing on seasonal and zero-waste cooking and food as memory and heritage. These examples demonstrate that the model we have been building, creating high-quality, values-led projects that can be sold externally, is beginning to work well, strengthening commercial income streams and generating more local paid work for freelance artists. We continued to work in partnership with Without Walls, to help co-create and share outdoor art with communities across the country. Festival of Thrift continued its status as an Arts Council England NPO, part of the national portfolio of regularly funded organisations 2023-2026. It was also successful in securing extension funding as an NPO for the next two years, 2026 to 2028. We continued to develop our relationship with Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA), working with them as part of the Tees Valley Festivals Scale Up Programme that supported capacity and opportunity to develop profile, product and impact for cultural activity in the region. Festival of Thrift also became the lead partner in delivery of Tees Valley Festivals Volunteering, supporting infrastructure and skills development to build cultural volunteering opportunities across the region. Towards the end of the year, we were delighted to confirm a new partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Council that would see the return of the annual Festival of Thrift to its previous home in Kirkleatham, near Redcar, in July 2026.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders include our funders, sponsors, artists and artistic collaborators, staff team, volunteers and a wide community of visitors and participants in our work. We have regular meetings and provide quarterly updates to our funders, including Arts Council England and Tees Valley Combined Authority. Evaluation surveys were conducted onsite and online at the 2025 festival with our festival audience with overwhelming positive feedback. We use this feedback to inform changes or additions to the programme and the overall festival experience. Ongoing consultation takes place year-round during our community engagement activities which enables us to co-design our projects with the community. Changes we have implemented here include timings and location of community activities.
