Our activities brought the generations together, and both young and old benefited. We made a particular effort to involve older community members, many of whom are at risk of isolation. Regular activities such as yoga and English classes helped them stay active, connected and part of community life. At the same time, 12 of our 31 safety stewards were under 25. Working alongside experienced elders, they helped run the Bonfire Night Fireworks Display and the Colchester 10K safely. They learned the trade firsthand: how to manage crowds, keep the public and runners safe, and help large events run smoothly. This experience gives them the knowledge and confidence to organise and run safe community events in the future. Skills and experience are passed from one generation to the next, building the volunteers and leaders our community will need.
What our participants said Our yoga and English classes are attended by older members of all ages, including an 82-year-old gentleman and three ladies aged 79 to 82, with many more members in their late sixties and early seventies. They told us: “These classes have taken away our loneliness and made us stronger. We have learned so much in the English classes, and we now feel much more confident.” Our young volunteers said: “We have learned a great deal from our elders. They showed us how to run activities properly and to the best of our ability.” A highlight of this year’s Carnival was the first appearance of the Red Knights International Firefighters Motorcycle Club, England 4 Chapter. Members joined the procession on their impressive motorcycles, accompanied by a fire engine, and were a big hit with spectators of all ages, especially children. We are delighted that the Red Knights will become a regular part of the Colchester City Carnival and Funfair in the years ahead.
