During the financial year Who Cares Consultancy C.I.C. continued to work towards its mission of empowering care-experienced and marginalised young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate independence and achieve positive outcomes. Our activities focused on developing accessible resources, strengthening partnerships and creating opportunities for young people to influence the services and support available to them. Promoting Independence and Life Skills We continued to promote My Book of Independence, a practical resource designed to support young people in developing essential life skills, including financial literacy, housing, employment, wellbeing and managing everyday responsibilities. During this period, we worked towards expanding our educational resources, including developing the second volume, a companion workbook and guidance for professionals. These resources aim to address gaps in practical independence education and provide young people with tools they can use throughout their transition into adulthood. Partnerships and Community Engagement We engaged with organisations, local authorities and professionals working with care-experienced and disadvantaged young people to explore opportunities for collaboration, resource development and improved support. These activities helped strengthen relationships across the sector, identify challenges affecting young people and inform our approach to developing practical, accessible and relevant services. Youth Voice and Co-production A key focus was laying the foundations for Real Lives, Real Tools, a youth-led initiative designed to involve care-experienced young people in shaping and delivering independence-focused training. Development work included programme planning, partnership engagement, funding applications and creating opportunities for young people to become paid co-facilitators. This approach aims to ensure that young people are recognised not simply as recipients of support, but as individuals whose lived experiences, knowledge and perspectives can influence professional practice and service development. Building Sustainable Community Impact Throughout the year, we also strengthened our organisational governance, safeguarding arrangements and strategic planning to support the responsible delivery and future growth of our community activities. Although much of the year focused on development and establishing the foundations for future delivery, these activities contributed to our community purpose by improving the resources, relationships and opportunities available to support care-experienced and marginalised young people. Our long-term commitment remains to ensure that young people have access to practical tools, meaningful opportunities and a voice in shaping the services that affect their lives.
During the financial year, Who Cares Consultancy C.I.C. engaged with a range of stakeholders, including care-experienced young people, local authorities, voluntary sector organisations, professionals and strategic advisors, to inform the development of our resources, programmes and services. Engagement included discussions with organisations such as Centrepoint, Bexley Council, Partnership for Young London and other professionals working with children in care and care leavers. These conversations helped identify gaps in independence support, explore opportunities for collaboration and better understand the challenges young people face when transitioning into adulthood. We also engaged with young people and professionals to gather feedback on the relevance, accessibility and practical application of My Book of Independence, helping inform the continued development of our educational resources. Stakeholder discussions contributed to the planning of our Real Lives, Real Tools programme, particularly the importance of co-production, meaningful youth participation and creating paid opportunities for care-experienced young people to share their knowledge and experiences. Feedback and professional guidance from our developing advisory and governance team also supported improvements to our organisational strategy, safeguarding arrangements and plans for sustainable community delivery. These consultations helped ensure that our activities remained informed by lived experience, professional expertise and the needs of the communities we aim to support.
