Hungarian School of Bristol C.I.C – community and financial activities The Hungarian School of Bristol C.I.C. is the successor of the Hungarian Children’s School; and association that was founded in 2011. Our activities provide benefit to the children and families in South West England that are of Hungarian ethnicity, have Hungarian ancestry, or any residents of the UK that have an interest in Hungarian culture, customs, tradition and language. Our events are designed to help Hungarian related families in Bristol and surrounding areas to use and practise Hungarian language, study arts and history and to keep our traditions known and alive. Both children and adults in our community have the chance to develop stronger self-esteem, honour and pride towards their cultural background due to knowing and understanding it better while they can also learn to integrate it into the rich and diverse heritage and cultural environment the United Kingdom offers. The CIC operates under 2 trading names, “Tuzmadar Tanoda” and “Dunavon Hungarian Folk Dance Ensamble”. The former is a Saturday School for children and families and the latter is folk dance group for adults. Tuzmadar Tanoda – Saturday School During our fortnightly Saturday School children can join age-appropriate activities led mostly by trained Hungarian teachers and enthusiastic volunteers. We are proud to say; that in the last four years the number of regularly attending families is constantly around 40. Our events are based on Hungarian traditions and celebrations; and they are open to local British families too e.g. Christmas Fair; Easter; and a Summer Camp. The project aims to boost mental health; social skills and confidence. Also used as a "drop-in" support group for parents and carers one day where advice to address parents and single parent concerns on issues such as unemployment; social isolation; stress; anxiety and mental well-being. The Saturday School is focused on the children of our community, so all the work is done by the parents with help from members of the Hungarian community who align with our ideals. Parents and helpers get involved in the actual events; volunteering to cook; clean; or help at our events with face-painitng; baloon tricks; child minding; teaching; singing; dance coaching; drama classes; whatever expertise or passions they may have. www.tuzmadartanoda.org.uk www.facebook.com/TuzmadarTanoda Dunavon Hungarian Folk Dance Ensemble The group was formed in 2019 in Bristol with the help of Andrea Szabo, a participant of the Korosi Csoma Sandor programme supporting Hungarian communities worldwide. The group launched with great enthusiasm, although progress was slowed by the Covid pandemic when rehearsals were put on hold. We organise social folk dance events in Bristol where a live band plays Hungarian folk music and our volunteers help beginners take their first steps to learn the dances together. These events include a children’s dance house as a playful introduction for young ones to Hungarian children's games and dances. The social folk dance night is also an opportunity for seasoned dancers to enjoy the live music and show off their dance moves with music representing multiple regions. The ensemble holds weekly rehearsals every Wednesday 6.45pm - 8.45pm. We also hold rehearsals every second Sunday of the month between 10am and 4pm. These sessions may be dedicated to refreshing an existing choreography or creating a new programme. There are no rehearsals during the winter and summer break. Dunavon are proud to have performed on numerous occasions throughout the country and we welcome invitations to bring Hungarian folk dances to communities in the form of performances. We can also provide a session for the audience to join in with some dancing! www.dunavon.dance https://www.facebook.com/bristolimagyarneptancegyuttes
