During its first financial year, WellFight CIC developed and distributed educational games, stories and creative resources designed to improve understanding of diabetes, reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about living with long-term health conditions. Through its DiaFight initiative, the company engaged children, families, healthcare professionals and members of the wider public at community events, diabetes conferences, family camps and major gaming conventions. Activities included interactive demonstrations, playtesting and the distribution of games and educational resources, including free resources made available through sponsorship. Notable activities included Friends for Life Orlando, where more than 1,500 items were distributed, DRWF family camp activities, and public engagement at Comic Con events. These activities helped make diabetes education more accessible, approachable and enjoyable, particularly for children and people who might not otherwise engage with traditional health education. WellFight also involved people with lived experience of diabetes in developing its resources, commissioned creative work from artists with diabetes, and gathered feedback to improve its games and educational approach. The community benefited through improved access to engaging educational resources, opportunities to discuss the emotional and practical challenges of diabetes, greater public awareness and positive representation of people living with long-term health conditions. WellFight's activities were designed to complement, rather than replace, professional healthcare advice.
WellFight CIC consulted a range of stakeholders throughout the financial year, including people living with diabetes, children and young people, parents and carers, healthcare professionals, researchers and community organisations. Consultation included focus groups and workshops supported by the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF), alongside interactive playtesting and feedback gathered at gaming conventions, diabetes conferences and community events. Structured feedback was collected from 30 participants during Comic Con playtesting, exploring understanding of diabetes, confidence discussing the condition and perceptions of the games. Further informal feedback was gathered through activities at Children with Diabetes Friends for Life Orlando and DRWF family events. WellFight also worked with artists with lived experience of diabetes to help ensure that its characters, stories and educational materials reflected real experiences and were respectful and relatable. Feedback from stakeholders informed ongoing improvements to game mechanics, educational content, accessibility and age appropriateness. Consultation also helped identify opportunities for supporting families, encouraging conversations about diabetes and making health education more engaging. WellFight remains committed to involving people with lived experience, healthcare professionals and community partners in the continued development of its activities.
