Accounting policies |
Summary of significant accounting policies and key accounting estimates
The principal accounting policies applied in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all the years presented, unless otherwise stated.
Statement of compliance
These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Financial Reporting Standard 102 Section 1A - 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006.
General information and basis of accounting
The limited liability partnership is incorporated in England under the Limited Liability Partnership Act 2000. The address of the registered office is given on the limited liability partnership information page. The nature of the limited liability partnership’s operations and its principal activities are given in the members’ report.
These financial statements have been prepared using the historical cost convention except that as disclosed in the accounting policies certain items are shown at fair value.
The functional currency of Peter Gunning & Partners LLP is considered to be pounds sterling because that is the currency of the primary economic environment in which the limited liability partnership operates. Foreign operations are included in accordance with the policies set out below.
Revenue recognition
Fee income represents revenue earned under a wide variety of contracts to provide professional services. Revenue is recognised as earned when, and to the extent that, the firm obtains the right to consideration in exchange for its performance under these contracts. It is measured at the fair value of the right to consideration, which represents amounts chargeable to clients, including expenses and disbursements but excluding value added tax.
Revenue is generally recognised as contract activity progresses so that for incomplete contracts it reflects the partial performance of the contractual obligations. For such contracts the amount of revenue reflects the accrual of the right to consideration by reference to the value of work performed. Revenue not billed to clients is included in debtors if the work is complete or work in progress if partially completed and payments on account in excess of the relevant amount of revenue are included in creditors.
Fee income that is contingent on events outside the control of the firm is recognised when the contingent event occurs.
Government grants
Revenue grants are recognised on a systematic basis over the periods in which the LLP recognises the related costs for which the grant is intended to compensate.
A grant that becomes receivable as compensation for expenses or losses already incurred, or for the purpose of giving immediate financial support to the LLP with no future related costs, shall be recognised in income in the period in which it becomes receivable.
The LLP accessed a government backed "Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme" in May 2020. The loan is 80% guaranteed by the government.
Members' remuneration and division of profits
The LLP agreement provides that the profits of the LLP for each accounting period or such part of them as is available for distribution from time to time shall belong to and be borne by the members in proportion to which they are presently entitled at the end of the accounting period or as otherwise agreed. These amounts are included within Members remuneration charged to the profit and loss account.
In addition, the limited liability partnership agreement provides that fixed amounts, determined for each member each year, be paid to members, irrespective of the profits of the partnership. These amounts are also included within members’ remuneration charged to the profit and loss account.
A member's share of the profit or loss for the year is accounted for as an allocation of profits. Unallocated profits and losses are included within 'other reserves'.
Peter Gunning & Partners LLP
Notes to the Financial Statementsfor the Year Ended 31 March 2026
Taxation
The taxation payable on the partnership's profits is the personal liability of the members, although payment of such liabilities is administered by the partnership on behalf of its members. Consequently, neither partnership taxation nor related deferred taxation is accounted for in these financial statements. Sums set aside in respect of members' tax obligations are included in the balance sheet within loans and other debts due to members, or are set against amounts due from members as appropriate.
Tangible fixed assets
Individual fixed assets costing £0.00 or more are initially recorded at cost.
Depreciation
Depreciation is provided on tangible fixed assets so as to write off the cost or valuation, less any estimated residual value, over their expected useful economic life as follows:
|
Asset class |
Depreciation method and rate |
|
Office and computer equipment |
25% straight line basis |
|
Fixtures, fittings and equipment |
15% reducing balance basis |
|
Motor vehicles |
25% reducing balance basis |
|
Staff bikes |
Fully depreciated in year of acquisition |
Work in progress
Work in progress is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Net realisable value is based on selling price less anticipated costs to completion and selling costs. Cost includes all direct costs and an appropriate proportion of fixed and variable overheads.
Trade debtors
Trade debtors are amounts due from customers for merchandise sold or services performed in the ordinary course of business.
Trade debtors are recognised initially at the transaction price. They are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less provision for impairment. A provision for the impairment of trade debtors is established when there is objective evidence that the limited liability partnership will not be able to collect all amounts due according to the original terms of the receivables.
Cash and cash equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash on hand and call deposits, and other short-term highly liquid investments that are readily convertible to a known amount of cash and are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value.
Trade creditors
Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of business from suppliers. Accounts payable are classified as current liabilities if the limited liability partnership does not have an unconditional right, at the end of the reporting period, to defer settlement of the creditor for at least twelve months after the reporting date. If there is an unconditional right to defer settlement for at least twelve months after the reporting date, they are presented as non-current liabilities.
Trade creditors are recognised initially at the transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
Pensions and other post retirement obligations
The partnership operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions are recognised in the profit and loss account in the period in which they become payable in accordance with the rules of the scheme.
