Activities Undertaken and Community Benefit During the reporting period, Mile Oak Community Garden C.I.C. made significant progress towards its objectives of creating a welcoming, inclusive and sustainable community garden for the benefit of local residents and the wider community. The community garden was opened during 2025, marking an important milestone in the development of the project. Considerable work was undertaken to improve the grounds, establish safer access and begin transforming the area into an attractive and usable outdoor community space. A major achievement during the year was the installation of access steps and associated safety improvements. These works provided a more practical entrance to the garden and enabled volunteers to begin participating in its development. Further improvements included the installation of planters and safety barriers, clearing overgrown areas, preparing the main grounds, improving site safety and replanting existing plants to create a more welcoming environment. Planters were also filled with soil and prepared for future planting. These activities established the foundations for the continued development of the garden as a community resource. Volunteers contributed their time, skills and enthusiasm to the project, supporting garden clearance, planting, maintenance and general improvements. The company recognises the important contribution that volunteering makes to community wellbeing. Participation in gardening and outdoor activities provides opportunities for gentle physical exercise, social interaction, developing friendships and gaining a sense of purpose and achievement. The garden also aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation by providing a welcoming environment where individuals can meet, participate in activities and feel connected to their local community. The company's intention is that the garden remains open and welcoming to everyone, regardless of gardening experience or ability. Information about garden access is displayed outside when the garden is open, and visitors may also request access through Reception. The project continues to develop, with further planting, improvements and volunteer involvement planned for future reporting periods. Legend on a Bench – Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness During the reporting period, Mile Oak Community Garden C.I.C. was involved in the planning and development of Legend on a Bench, a community initiative designed to raise awareness of suicide prevention, encourage open conversations about mental health and promote social connection and wellbeing. On 29 September 2025, the company received a grant of £240 from Portslade Together HNF, specifically awarded for the implementation of the Legend on a Bench project. In accordance with the purpose of the grant, the funding was allocated towards the construction of the bench base, an essential part of establishing the project. The funds were subsequently used for this purpose after the financial year-end of 31 January 2026. The initiative aims to provide a welcoming and supportive place for reflection and conversation, helping to raise awareness of mental health challenges and encouraging individuals to seek appropriate support when needed. The project complements the Community Garden's wider objectives of reducing social isolation, promoting positive mental health and strengthening community relationships.
