Company activities and impact

In pursuit of our objectives, we delivered 42 workshops, training or mentoring sessions, theatre projects, get-togethers and performances. Across 108 hours of delivery: 38 people were directly supported across 5 or more occasions and we had over 210 engagements with people who attended performances or took part in workshops and get togethers on no more than 2 occasions. Our engagement included 70 people who attended the Forum Theatre play ‘The Empty Chair’ at Chats Palace. The production was co-created by company members and directed by Kim Mouzouros, a graduate of our original Inclusive Facilitation Through Theatre course in 2023. Participants were involved in devising, rehearsing and performing the work, and one reflected: “I pushed myself to deliver the Forum, which had previously felt scary. It felt good this time.” Audience feedback described the performance as “a really wonderful and unique experience - kind, thought provoking and inclusive.” In this 25-26 period we also delivered a second round of our Inclusive Facilitation Through Theatre course, engaging 12 long-term unemployed participants in over 35 hours of training. This included a total of 48 hours of work experience and 27 work-related certifications across the group, including Safeguarding and Trauma Informed Practice. One participant told us: “I feel that i am now better equipped to be more inclusive in my workshops and can diversify my work perspectives.” During this period we were also very happy to begin our Creative Connections get-togethers for those involved in our company. These have continued to take place regularly at different community venues in Islington and Hackney, providing opportunities for connection, peer support and continuing involvement with Change, Act!. We are grateful to the funders who made this work possible, including Comic Relief, Cripplegate Foundation, City Bridge Foundation, Islington Council and the Greater London Authority.

Consultation with stakeholders

We routinely provide opportunities for participants to give feedback on workshops and activities delivered. In addition, we undertook three specific consultation activities during this period. Firstly, we consulted with participants in our Inclusive Facilitation Through Theatre course through pre- and post-course evaluation and a focus group session. Participants reported increased confidence, skills and enthusiasm for developing their practice. Feedback included “The learning was gold, I learned so much that I want to keep learning more.” Participants also told us they wanted more time to develop their skills, opportunities for further or intermediate-level training, greater support with group dynamics and conflict, and practical guidance around developing and funding their own work. We have used this learning to inform our subsequent work and are supporting four participants to develop their own work-related projects. Secondly, we consulted with participants and audiences of the Forum Theatre production The Empty Chair. Participants valued the collaborative process, skills development and sense of community. One participant told us: “A very professional & generous attitude was applied to to our performance & well being.” Finally, we participated in the Greater London Authority’s ‘London Community Resilience’ project. As part of this we consulted with company members to identify the challenges Disabled people may face during disruption to essential systems, including power cuts, flooding and transport disruption, and used this consultation to develop a community resilience plan.
