2 Statement of compliance

These
financial statements
have been prepared in compliance with FRS 102 Section 1A, 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable to the UK and Republic of Ireland'.

3 Accounting policies

Basis of preparation

The
financial statements
have been prepared on the historical cost basis, as modified by the revaluation of certain assets.
The
financial statements
are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the company.

Turnover

Fee income comprises revenue generated from various contracts for the provision of professional services. Revenue is recognised as services are performed and to the extent that the company becomes entitled to consideration under the terms of the relevant contracts. Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration receivable, including rechargeable expenses and disbursements, but excluding value added tax.
Revenue is generally recognised in line with the progress of work undertaken. Where contracts remain incomplete at the reporting date, revenue is recognised based on the proportion of services performed and the corresponding entitlement to consideration. Amounts relating to work completed but not yet invoiced to clients are included within Other Debtors.

Current tax

Current tax is recognised on taxable profit for the current and past periods. Current tax is measured at the amounts of tax expected to pay or recover using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted at the reporting date.

Goodwill

Goodwill arises on the acquisition of a business and represents the difference between the purchase consideration and the company's share of the fair value of the identifiable assets, liabilities and contingent liabilities acquired.
Goodwill is initially recognised at cost and subsequently measured net of accumulated amortisation and any impairment losses. Amortisation is charged on a straight-line basis over its estimated useful economic life. Where the useful life of goodwill or other intangible assets cannot be reliably determined, it is presumed to be no longer than ten years.

Tangible assets

Tangible assets are initially measured at cost, and are subsequently measured at cost less any accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment losses or at a revalued amount.
Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost of an asset, less its estimated residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:
Office equipment
20% straight line
Fixtures and fittings
20% straight line
Motor vehicles
20% reducing balance
Land and buildings
Straight line over 10 years

Impairment

At each reporting date, the company assesses whether there are any indications that an asset may be impaired. Where such indicators are identified, the recoverable amount of the asset is determined. An impairment loss is recognised where the carrying value exceeds the estimated recoverable amount. Previously recognised impairment losses are also reviewed at each reporting date to establish whether a reversal is appropriate.
Where the recoverable amount of an individual asset cannot be reliably established, the assessment is performed at the level of the cash-generating unit to which the asset relates. A cash-generating unit represents the smallest identifiable group of assets generating cash inflows that are largely independent of those arising from other assets or groups of assets.
For the purposes of impairment testing, goodwill acquired through a business combination is allocated, from the acquisition date, to the cash-generating units expected to benefit from the associated synergies. This allocation is made regardless of whether other assets or liabilities of the company are attributed to those units.

Finance leases and hire purchase contracts

Assets held under finance leases are recognised in the statement of financial position as assets and liabilities at the lower of the fair value of the assets and the present value of the minimum lease payments, which is determined at the inception of the lease term. Any initial direct costs of the lease are added to the amount recognised as an asset.
Lease payments are apportioned between the finance charges and reduction of the outstanding lease liability using the effective interest method. Finance charges are allocated to each period so as to produce a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability.

Financial instruments

The company only enters into basic financial instrument transactions that result in the recognition of financial assets and liabilities such as trade and other debtors and creditors, loans from banks and other third parties and loans to related parties.

Deferred tax

Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the reporting date. Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is more likely than not that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits. Deferred tax is measured on an undiscounted basis at the tax rates that would apply in the periods in which timing differences are expected to reverse, based on tax rates and laws enacted at the statement of financial position date.

Provisions for liabilities

Provisions are recognised when the entity has an obligation at the reporting date as a result of a past event; it is probable that the entity will be required to transfer economic benefits in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be estimated reliably. Provisions are recognised as a liability in the statement of financial position and the amount of the provision as an expense.
Provisions are initially measured at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the reporting date and subsequently reviewed at each reporting date and adjusted to reflect the current best estimate of the amount that would be required to settle the obligation. Any adjustments to the amounts previously recognised are recognised in profit or loss unless the provision was originally recognised as part of the cost of an asset. When a provision is measured at the present value of the amount expected to be required to settle the obligation, the unwinding of the discount is recognised in finance costs in profit or loss in the period it arises.

Defined contribution pension plan

Contributions to defined contribution plans are recognised as an expense in the period in which the related service is provided. Prepaid contributions are recognised as an asset to the extent that the prepayment will lead to a reduction in future payments or a cash refund.

Operating leases

A lease is classified as an operating lease if it does not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards incidental to ownership. Lease payments are recognised as an expense over the lease term on a straight-line basis. The aggregate benefit of lease incentives is recognised as a reduction to expense over the lease term, on a straight-line basis.
