During our first financial year, Becoming Arethusa CIC delivered 11 clinical art psychotherapy sessions across Devon and Cornwall, as part of two six-week programmes supporting 20 women affected by domestic abuse, coercive control and associated trauma. Our programmes provided safe, supportive therapeutic environments where women could explore and express their experiences through art, without relying solely on words. The sessions aimed to improve emotional wellbeing, rebuild confidence and personal agency, reduce isolation and develop supportive connections between women with shared experiences. We monitored participants' wellbeing using the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), alongside opportunities for reflection and feedback. This helped us understand participants' experiences and inform our approach to future delivery. We also worked with community and statutory partners, including Improving Lives Plymouth, the Sunflower Centre, Trauma Informed Network Plymouth and Plymouth City Council. Feedback helped us improve accessibility by keeping therapeutic groups smaller and developing clearer referral processes through trusted partner organisations. Our first year established the foundations for our wider mission: combining clinical art psychotherapy with survivor-led advocacy, ensuring women's lived experiences are heard and contribute to greater public and professional understanding of domestic abuse and its lasting consequences.
