| 2. | ACCOUNTING POLICIES |
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Going concern
Accounting standards require the directors to assess the appropriateness of the going concern basis when preparing the financial statements. The directors have undertaken this assessment, covering a period of at least 12 months from the date of approval of these financial statements, and consider the going concern basis to remain appropriate.
Turnover in the year was lower than in the previous period, which benefited from a number of non-recurring projects that have since been completed. In response, the directors undertook a review of the business and implemented measures to improve efficiency, align the cost base with current levels of activity, and strengthen operational performance. Since the year end, trading has performed in line with management expectations.
The company maintains positive reserves, adequate cash balances, and access to banking facilities. The directors consider that the company's financial resources, together with its order book, trading prospects, and established relationships with customers, suppliers and lender, provide sufficient support for the business to meets its obligations as they fall due.
The directors have prepared profit and cash flow forecasts for the assessment period. These forecasts take account of the company's expected trading activity and commitments and indicate that the company will be able to operate within its available financial resources through the period under review.
In reaching their conclusion, the directors have also considered the company's obligations under the Employee Ownership Trust arrangements and are satisfied that these commitments can be managed in a manner consistent with maintaining appropriate levels of liquidity and working capital
Accordingly, the directors continue to adopt the going concern basis in preparing these financial statements.
Turnover
Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, excluding discounts, rebates, value added tax and other sales taxes.
Revenue is recognised as earned when, and to the extent that, the company obtains the right to consideration in exchange for its performance under contracts. It is measured at the fair value of the right to consideration, which represents amounts chargeable to clients, including expenses and disbursements but excluding value added tax. Revenue is generally recognised as contract activity progresses so that for incomplete contracts it reflects the partial performance of the contractual obligations. For such contracts the amount of revenue reflects the accrual of the right to consideration by reference to the value of work performed. Revenue invoiced to customers in advance of performance of duties or delivery of good is recognised in deferred income in creditors. Any services or goods provided before the year end which have not been invoiced at the year end are recognised in accrued income in debtors.
Income that is contingent on events outside the control of the company is recognised when the contingent event occurs.
Intangible assets
Intangible assets are initially measured at cost. After initial recognition, intangible assets are measured at cost less any accumulated amortisation and any accumulated impairment losses.

Stocks and work in progress
Stock is calculated using the first-in, first-out method and includes all purchase, transport, and handling costs in bringing stocks to their present location and condition.
Work in progress is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
Taxation
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity.
Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted.
Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date.
Deferred tax
Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date.
Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference.
Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits.
Research and development
Development costs are capitalised within intangible assets where they can be identified with a specific product or project anticipated to produce future benefits, and are amortised on the straight line basis over the anticipated life of the benefits arising from the completed product or project.
Deferred research and development costs are reviewed annually, and where future benefits are deemed to have ceased or to be in doubt, the balance of any related research and development is written off to the profit and loss account.
Hire purchase and leasing commitments
Assets obtained under hire purchase contracts or finance leases are capitalised in the balance sheet. Those held under hire purchase contracts are depreciated over their estimated useful lives. Those held under finance leases are depreciated over their estimated useful lives or the lease term, whichever is the shorter.
The interest element of these obligations is charged to profit or loss over the relevant period. The capital element of the future payments is treated as a liability.
Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to profit or loss on a straight line basis over the period of the lease.
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits
The company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the company's pension scheme are charged to profit or loss in the period to which they relate.
Debtors
Short term debtors are measured at transaction price, less any impairment.
