The Sound Lounge: We have been running monthly sessions of The Sound Lounge, a donation-based event popping up in places like The Anchor Inn in Hartland, Feel Good Larder in Barnstaple, Sunshine and Snow in Bideford, inviting people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to attend. Each creative session is themed around something and each person is welcome to bring an instrument, a song, a poem, a story, an anecdote or anything they would like to share around the chosen theme, or people can just drop in and listen and enjoy the sessions as observers. Every session is always different, and we also maintain a safe and held space for in-depth discussions around the themes. We tie the sessions in with Nature and seasonal changes and events throughout the year. We have had very positive feedback and regular engagement from local attendees in North Devon, so this initiative has been great for bringing the community together creatively, enabling people to form new friendship groups. Other Community Events: Our other community events have also been curated around phases and special dates in the year - spring equinox, winter solstice, moon cycles, historical months, artistic themes - in honour of seasons, cardinal points, and traditions in the calendar year and celebrates creative expression, joy, unity in our local communities and the love for what brings us together. Working in Partnership and Collaborations: We also collaborate actively with other charities, community groups and CICs in North Devon, and hold creative events together that mutually benefit our target audiences. A great example is 'Together Stories', which was a community art exhibition bringing organisations and people together to tell their unique stories. Created Festival: We were part of Created Festival for the past two years at The Big Sheep, where artists and makers from the southwest showcased their craft. We curated live interviews with makers, interspersed with live music slots from talented local musicians. The feedback was positive, saying that the music programme complemented the atmosphere and day and was received very well. Community and Individual Impact from Feedback and Testimonials: Our events have increased our participants’ self-esteem and social confidence, encourage them to think creatively, combat loneliness and insecurities, make friends and genuine connections. People who feel they have benefited always come back regularly and some have even established long lasting friendship groups. We get regular feedback from our events and The Sound Lounge sessions, complimenting the ease and joy in participating, better overall mental and emotional health and wellbeing, better self-awareness and deeper connections to community and environment, as well as more confidence to express themselves creatively. Our events challenge inequality by being open and non-judgemental, with careful facilitation and curation. We encourage people to make positive and assertive life choices that benefit themselves and others through sharing ideas and values. Whenever our events and sessions are funded, we can offset the cost of participating which will then help offset living costs. Through the sessions, participants have grown in courage and self-esteem, feeling they can express themselves creatively in these challenging times, and being completely seen and heard as individuals and as a collective.
Feedback and Testimonials from Stakeholders: Our Community "For the first time ever, I found a forum to share my poetry with the community in a truly appreciative and supportive environment. In addition, meeting a chorum of such diverse people and talent was both inspiring and enlightening. I hope these 'out-reach get-togethers' continue to a wide audience well into the future." - Rob Widdicombe, Morwenstow ---------------- "The Sound Lounge is a space where my daughter and I have always felt very accepted, warmly welcomed and totally free to try out new songs or old songs, the atmoshphere is nurturing, so even I, who usually feel very nervous can feel more relaxed; we both feel grateful to have this special community." - Fiona Oppenheimer, Bideford
