Notes to the Accounts

Intangible Asset Policy
Goodwill arising on the acquisition of pharmacy businesses represents the excess of the cost of acquisition over the fair value of the net assets acquired. It is measured at cost less accumulated amortisation and impairment, and is amortised on a straight-line basis over its estimated useful life of 10 years. Goodwill is reviewed for impairment where there is an indication that its carrying amount may not be recoverable.Additions in the year relate to the acquisition of a pharmacy business, including directly attributable acquisition costs.
Stock
Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to sell, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow-moving items. Cost is based on the most recent purchase price, which approximates to cost. Stock at the year end was determined by physical stock counts at each branch.
Deferred Tax
Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date, measured using the tax rates expected to apply when the timing differences reverse. Deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable they will be recovered. The deferred tax provision arises from capital allowances in excess of depreciation on tangible fixed assets.
