Rainbows Across Borders CIC supports LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees, particularly those who have experienced or are at risk of persecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. During the year, the CIC provided regular support and peer group sessions in Croydon, including emotional support, signposting to legal, housing and health services, guidance relating to the asylum process, and opportunities for members to share experiences and build confidence.
The CIC also delivered creative and community activities through its Rainbow Singers Across Borders Choir, including rehearsals, music workshops, performances and participation in Pride, Refugee Week, LGBT History Month and other community events. Through its partnership with Music Action International, members participated in creative music workshops, developed original music and performance skills, and worked towards producing an EP.
The CIC also supported social integration through regular social gatherings and encouraged members to participate in volunteering and community activities, helping to develop confidence, leadership and communication skills. The organisation also raised awareness of issues affecting LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees, including discrimination, persecution and human rights, and participated in campaigns and community events promoting equality and inclusion.
These activities provided members with a safe and supportive community, reduced isolation, promoted wellbeing and confidence, encouraged social integration, and provided opportunities for creative expression, skills development and participation in the wider community.
The CIC's Stakeholders include it's LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and Refugee members and service users, volunteers, directors, community partners and organisations supporting LGBTQ+ people, refugees and asylum seekers.
Stakeholders, particularly members and service users, were consulted through regular support group meeting, peer discussions and feedback received during the CIC's activities and events. Members were encouraged to share their experiences, needs and suggestions regarding the support and activities provided by the organisation.
Feedback from members identified the continuing impact of the cost of living, including difficulties with transport costs and a desire for greater opportunities to develop skills and contribute positively to the wider community. In response, the CIC continued to provide regular peer support and social activities, explored ways to support members' participation despite financial barriers, and continued to provide opportunities for volunteering, creatives, skills development and community engagement.
