START SMALL SUSSEX C.I.C.

Directors' report period ended 28 February 2026

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 28 February 2026

Principal activities of the company

Start Small Sussex C.I.C. supports families with disabled children aged 0–5 years, particularly those navigating the early stages of a new diagnosis. The organisation recognises that receiving a diagnosis during the early years can bring significant emotional challenges, uncertainty, financial pressures and feelings of isolation. Many of the families supported are on low incomes and receive Carer's Allowance. Start Small Sussex therefore provides free peer-led support groups, informal meet-ups and opportunities for families to connect without the additional financial burden of attending activities. The directors bring their own lived experience of parenting disabled children, alongside professional qualifications in counselling and psychotherapy. This enables them to offer an understanding, compassionate and supportive environment where parents can share experiences, access practical advice and build meaningful relationships with other families.

Political and charitable donations

Start Small Sussex received £5,000 originally allocated by Extratime. The funding was held by Amaze while Start Small was being established and transferred into the CIC bank account on 26 March 2025. The original transfer letter confirms that the funding was intended for activities supporting children and young people with SEND in Brighton & Hove. The grant has been used for community activities and running costs, including: Website development. Accessibility equipment. Telephone costs. Refreshments for parents. Postal address arrangements. Community membership. Poster printing. The remaining money is intended to support the continuation of the project.

Company activities and impact

During the first year, Start Small Sussex supported 10 families in Brighton & Hove and Sussex, all with young children with SEND or additional needs. Our support has included practical advice, emotional support, access to specialist equipment, opportunities to connect with other parents and a safe space to share experiences. We are a parent led organisation, founded by two mothers with lived experience of raising a child with complex needs and disabilities, who have a background in therapy and psychology. This has informed us of the lack of emotional support available to families like ours. During our first year, we have: - Held monthly parent and family support sessions. -Organised regular inclusive community meet-ups and events such as coffees and walks, sensory play and trips to local festivals. -Provided one-to-one support to families. -Started building a parent network online and in person. -Developed relationships with local professionals and organisations. -Developed the project and engaged with our local community. - Listened to parents' experiences and identified the support they need.

Consultation with stakeholders

As a parent led organisation we understand the importance of empowering the families we meet to have a say in the activities we provide and support they receive. We meet each family where they are at and ask them what is most helpful to them and then ask them for feedback. We have received testimonials from two families I would like to share here. Parent 1 'Start small were a huge help in the beginning when we were thrown into a life we weren't prepared for. Finding a group of people who would help, support, whether that was recommending specialist equipment or advice, or just people to talk to who understood, it has been such a lifeline to us a family. I don't know what I would have done without this group! Parent 2 'Thank you so much for taking time out to spend with us it is hugely appreciated and helpful. This might sound odd but seeing my partner cry for the first time since the birth and diagnosis highlighted how much she/we needed a conversation with someone so knowledgeable and understanding. Thanks for providing a space to share our emotions safely and helping us calm and focus. We both left feeling like we'd met a friend which means a lot to us.
