During the period from 4 February 2025 to 28 February 2026, Forward Football CIC delivered weekly Saturday morning football sessions for approximately 30 young people in Years 8–10. The company’s activities benefited the community in the following ways: Young people of different abilities were able to participate in football in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment, supporting regular physical activity and healthier lifestyles. Participants developed football skills, confidence and positive friendships, with sessions encouraging teamwork, respect and communication. The programme provided a structured weekend activity, creating opportunities for young people to socialise and feel part of their community. Free sessions during the programme’s first year helped remove financial barriers, enabling families to participate regardless of their financial circumstances. Young people in Years 11–13 had opportunities to coach and referee, gaining practical experience, taking on responsibility and developing leadership, communication and organisational skills. Feedback from young people and parents helped shape delivery. A more flexible approach to organising teams gave participants greater opportunities to play with friends, while increased emphasis on warm-ups and preparation supported their participation.
Forward Football’s key stakeholders included the young people who participated in the sessions, their parents and guardians, volunteer coaches, partner organisations and the wider local community. At the end of the first year of activity, we conducted a survey with both participants and parents to gather feedback on their experiences and understand how the programme could be improved. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting that they enjoyed the sessions and wanted more opportunities to take part. Parents valued the affordable cost, friendly environment, inclusiveness and the opportunity for their children to have a positive activity to attend on a Saturday morning. In response to stakeholder feedback, Forward Football did however adapt the format of sessions. We moved away from a structured league format with fixed teams and introduced a more flexible approach where participants could play casually with friends each week. We also placed greater emphasis on warm-ups and preparation activities, following requests from participants and parents to improve the overall experience. The CIC has also supported the development of young people through its coaching structure. Four coaches aged 16–18 have been involved in delivering sessions and 5 young people have gained official FA refereeing qualifications, helping them develop valuable leadership, communication and employability skills. Forward Football has worked alongside community partners including Birmingham City Foundation, Birmingham United and the United by 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Legacy Fund to strengthen its community impact. Over the two years of delivery, the programme has created a strong sense of community among regular participants, providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where young people can be active, socialise and build positive relationships.
See Note (3) of Notes to the Financial Statements. Copied below for reference. No remuneration was paid to directors for services undertaken in their capacity as directors. During the period, the company paid £400 to one of the directors for referee services provided on normal commercial terms. The director concerned was excluded from discussions relating to referee payments.
